How to Update WordPress, Themes & Plugins Safely
Updates fix security holes and bugs. A quick backup first means you can always roll back if something misbehaves.
-
1
Back up first
Take a fresh backup from cPanel (or your backup plugin) before you update anything.
-
2
Update core, then plugins
In Dashboard → Updates, update WordPress core first, then plugins, then your theme.
-
3
Check your site
Visit your homepage and a couple of key pages to confirm everything still works.
-
4
Fix if needed
If a plugin breaks something, deactivate it or restore your backup, then contact the plugin author.
Tip: Test big updates on a staging site first — see our "Create a WordPress staging site" guide.
